Comparison Shopping

What are Comparison Shopping Engines?

Comparison shopping engines are shopping portals that allow online shoppers to compare products side-by-side from multiple online retailers. Advertisers can show their entire product catalog in these shopping portals providing them greater reach to customers who are in the last stage of the buying process and are ready to buy. Some of these shopping engines are free to use and some charge per click.

How does it work?

Advertisers sign up with these comparison shopping engines and submit one or more products, usually utilizing a data feed that will contain various products. Data feeds have different formats depending on the shopping engine and can be submitted via FTP. After the data feed is uploaded successfully, then the advertiser’s products start to show up in the shopping engine result pages. These result pages, which are generated dynamically based on a product search by a web user, show a list of products from several vendors with product images, prices, reviews, shipping and tax costs for each one of the products. Then, the web user finds the product he/she is looking for, at the right price and from the right vendor and after clicking on the chosen product, the web user is taken to the vendor’s site to finalize the purchase.
