6 Quick and Easy SEO Tips
SEO doesn’t have to be complicated. And the truth is, the more you use it, the more it will all come naturally. There are some easy steps you can learn and complete in 20 minutes or less that will help you see that your search engine optimization is on track.
Identify Your Highest Authority Links and Request Anchor Text Changes
You can get an SEO audit to see what sites are linking back to you (or do it yourself with certain Web tools) and then identify your highest authority links and see what anchor text they are using. You will find, unfortunately, that many people still use spammy anchor text like “click here”, “buy now” or “read more”. You can request that they change these to your chosen keywords. Don’t obsess over every single linkback out there- just worry about the highest authority ones.
Avoid Duplicate Content
Most people today know that duplicate content is bad but you may not know the ways that duplicate content can sneak in when you’re not expecting it. For example, do your site pages exist at www.example.com and example.com? This is one of the most common causes of duplicate content and it’s an easy fix (just a redirect). You should also use Google Webmaster Tools to check for duplicate title elements on your website. You can also look for keyword cannibalization and bad title element structure that lead to duplicate content.
Review Your Robots.txt File
Check your robots.txt file by visiting /robots.txt and look to see if you are withholding pages, images, folder and more from the search engines. Some people don’t realize they they are actually limiting what content the search engines see and some of this content could be used to increase your search ranking.
Improve Your Bounce Rate on Pages
Again, you can use Google’s Webmaster Tools for this one, look and see what your click-thru-rate (CTR) or bounce rates are on pages. Analyze the pages with the biggest bounce rate and see what can be improved. Do you need to add or remove content? Do you need to edit the titles and headers for the pages? Review the meta data as well and the keywords that are used when people land on this page.
Verify Your Google and Bing Local Listings
This is quick and easy to do – if you have Google or Bing listings, be sure to stop by and verify them as yours. This builds your credibility with the search engines and also helps to establish a local verified presence for who you are.
Review Navigation and Site Wide Links
You also need to do a regular review of all of your navigation and site wide links. Make sure that everything links properly and nothing gives 404 errors. Review the links in your main, footer and breadcrumbs to make sure there are no duplicate content issues or default pages that don’t link correctly. This will help clean up internal linking issues within your site.
