Having a Unique Topic is Important for SEO

Posted May 3rd 2013 Search Engine Optimization - 0 Comments

SEOWhen it comes to being found on the web, having a unique topic or angle is becoming more and more important. Uniqueness is going to bring in more readers who are really interested in what you’re sharing. A clear, focused topic will allow you to keep your article optimized for search and provide value to readers without sacrificing quality.

Narrowing down a unique topic

When choosing a topic, there are a few ways to narrow it down to make it unique. You want to find an angle that isn’t already over saturated on the web. Checking whether or not your topic is over saturated is as easy as doing a couple of searches and seeing how many search results come up, and whether those results are quality pages. If there are too many related results, you need to narrow your topic. For example, searching for dog biscuits returns 8.8 million results, homemade dog biscuits returns 1.3 million, and homemade dog biscuit recipes returns 134,000 results. It’s a lot easier to stand out among thousands of pages than millions!

By focusing on one aspect of a subject, you’ll be able to stand out from all of the more basic and generic topics. Of course, standing out among the crowd is only half the battle.

Increased value

Once a reader chooses to click on your search results, they should find what they were looking for. When you share information on a unique and focused topic, you provide a more valuable experience for your readers. This will make them feel rewarded and more likely to see what else your site has to offer them, reducing your bounce rate. It builds trust when you consistently share valuable information, and your readers will appreciate being able to find exactly what they are looking for. After a reader has seen that you provide quality information, they’re more likely to click your links when they come up again in search.

Reduces competition

Web users are becoming more savvy about using specific search terms to find what they are looking for. They’ve learned that simply searching for dog biscuits is going to return millions of hits, but if they search for homemade dog biscuit recipes, they are more likely to find what they’re really looking for. By using unique topics, you won’t be competing with millions of other sites, only the few who might have a similar focused topic.

Improves natural SEO

It becomes easier to have great SEO when your topic is well focused and unique. Not only will your keywords flow easier throughout the text, but the article will also be more likely to remain on topic, reducing the clutter of unrelated keywords sneaking in on you. Tight, concise writing is far easier when using a well focused topic.

Using good SEO tactics doesn’t have to be difficult, or some magic formula. It can be as simple as having a great unique topic and natural flow of valuable information. In fact, if you have focused your topic well enough, you can almost ignore keywords because they will fall into place on their own.
