How Google Penguin 2.0 is Affecting SEO Efforts

Posted July 26th 2013 Search Engine Optimization - 0 Comments

SEOGoogle has made a recent change in their algorithm and it is putting business owners on notice to make changes to their SEO practices.  The new Penguin update means big changes in some areas that you must be aware of in order to make the proper changes to keep or increase your Google page ranking.  While this can be frustrating, these changes are made so that the returns are improved by the new algorithm.  Because Google decides where your page is ranked, they can make the changes that they want and you have to comply with these changes.  Below are some ways that Google Penguin is affecting SEO efforts.

Penguin 2.0

Even though the changes in the algorithm occurred a couple of months ago, the changes are still being felt all over the world.  There are two very well known algorithm updates for Google, one is Penguin and the other Panda.  Panda related mostly to the type of content, quality content, and when it updates the quality of the content changes.  Penguin dealt mainly with web spam and this update makes website have the need to be an authority in their industry or niche.  Any site that offers a great deal of authority automatically gets a higher ranking than those that do not.  This is done through social media strategies as well as an author rank.

The Importance of Anchor Text

One of the most important aspects of this update is how you use your anchor text when writing your guest posts. You can’t always control how others link to you but you can control your guest post links.  Before, it was important to use anchor text that was keyword rich and that was enough to get you a higher page ranking.  Now, Google will penalize you for using the same anchor text too often or in a spammy way. You want to mix it up and when in doubt, use your brand/business name as the anchor text.

How to Work Within the New Penguin System

You want to first and foremost make sure all content on your site is the absolute best that you can do. Make sure you have completely up to par content, even if that means hiring a professional. Take time to keep up to date on what Google is doing. Reading their blog is a great way to know about future updates and what updates mean to the algorithm.

Keep a check on your backlinks. It is a good idea to hire a professional who can go through your links to remove those that Google considers low quality or bought and if it needs to be done, put forth a reconsideration request directly to Google.

With the new Penguin update the most important thing to do is to make yourself an authority on Google.  You can do this by using your social media strategies and shares to boost your Google ranking which is what the bots are now looking for.  Remove any links that are poor quality and work towards attaining the links that are genuine.

SEO is a tricky machine. Search engines are regularly changing and updating algorithms, like with Google Penguin. If you think it’s all just too much for you to keep up with, consider hiring a professional to help today.
