Google+ Social Signals Affect Your Search Ranking

Posted October 22nd 2012 Blogs Social Media

Social media is making an impression today in more ways than you might think. For example, social media now affects your ranking in search engines and placement in search results for certain keywords and phrases. It’s all based on what we call “social signals” which involves not just what you post, but who interacts with it and how. So the more comments, shares and other interaction you get, the better.

Google+ social signals affect your search rankings in quite a few major ways. The introduction of several changes makes it clear that there is a connection between the two since the launch of Google+. For example, webmasters are tracking social signals to learn more about what engages readers the most and how to duplicate content like this for yourself. How do you know what works for you and what doesn’t?

The Power of the +1

A person that is a member of Google+ will see specific items when searching for a particular keyword in Google search. If someone in that person’s network has given a +1 to a relevant page, the page will appear among the top search engine results which basically means that you will see results that your friends have given a +1 to. The +1 can be considered a recommendation that one person gives to others in their network. So when you give a +1, you are saying you like the page and recommend it to others and when you come across a page your friends have given a +1, the search results will tell you.

Google+ members can expand their own network by personalizing the search results by rating the pages that appear from their searches. When you give a +1 to content that is useful or interesting, you change the search results for whenever you search that topic again. The search engine will also give higher placement to that page to your friends in your Google+ network. So the more users interact with the network, the more it will affect their search results. Your goal is to create a site that users want to give +1s to.

Search Personalization

One way in which social signals are affecting search is with personalization. In January of this year, Google told us more about this on their blog. Some benefits include:

  • Personal Results: enables you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page
  • Profiles in Search: enables you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following
  • People and Pages: helps you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks

It is this personalization that Google+ allows that is helping increase your search ranking based on the activity to your site pages and even to your own G+ profile or business page.

With the Google +1 feature and more personalized search results, it’s almost like Google knows what you are thinking and gives you the results you’re truly looking for. What are some ways that you can benefit from these social signals to increase your search ranking?
