Meta TagsWhen it comes to SEO of a website, there are different elements that help the search rankings and effectiveness of a site and its pages. Meta tags are one of those elements. If you learn how to write effective page description meta tags, you will greatly increase your SEO with some of the simplest steps imaginable.

So how do you do it?

First, you need to know what the meta tags are? First, a meta tag is simply a word that means data about data, at least originally. In SEO terms, it’s the tag that gives more information about the web page. This information is intended to be read by the web crawler, also called “search engine spiders”. The meta data is not meant for the human reader. So while they are not mandatory, they can be incredibly helpful to your SEO.

So where does the meta tag go?

This is a great question if you are new to using meta tags. If you are using a content management system, there might already be places you can see to add your meta tags. You just plug in the words where it asks you to. If you’re using an HTML site, website data goes in the <head> and </head> tags.

Despite what some will say, meta tags are not dead and they are proving still helpful to SEO when used correctly in the page title, page description and page keywords. They help to identify what the page is about and can control how, where and when a search bot should index your page.

So how do you write them?

Now we know what meta tags are and that they are important so let’s get to the part where we tell you how to write them. First, if you’re writing  a page description, it should be a description of the page. Sounds easy enough, right? You should never try to trick the bots into thinking your page is about something you want to be ranked for if that page does not contain that information.

The main goal of your meta tag description is to insert appropriate keywords and tell what the page is about. You also want to be sure the meta tag is done is a creative but attractive way so that the search engines read it correctly and easily. Messy code takes longer for the bots to process, or can hinder the process completely.

Keep it short

When writing your page description meta data, be sure to keep it from running too long or it will just get cut short by the search engines when they display it on search results pages. Remember that if you are using a CMS like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla, they will give you a great, user-friendly dialog box to type your info into. But if the site is HTML-based, you need to know how and where to put this code yourself.

So to recap: keep your page description meta tags short and to the point, with relevant keywords and be sure they properly describe the page. Taking the time to add the meta data for the page can still help your SEO.
